“Every detail of the Hoplit RS’s frame has been subjected to deep contemplation. Its arduous construction process even required specialist tools to be developed by the Falkenjagd team in conjunction with the manufacturer of the tube sets. Few or no manufacturers go to such lengths.”
Johannes Haidn, test director, world of mtb Magazin
This is the bike that set everything rolling. In 2005 we built the forerunner of the Hoplit RS frame for ourselves and a group of friends, to compete in the Sellaronda HERO in Austria. The project grew out of our growing dissatisfaction with the soullessness of carbon fibre, together with a beer-fuelled “what if?” evening with bike-mad aviation engineers. The shared goal was quickly established: the development of an extremely stable, durable and robust frame, that could withstand even the toughest racing conditions and not have to be treated with kid gloves – unlike carbon fibre frames.
We took inspiration from the hoplites of ancient Greece, the best-armed warriors of their time. Unusually, this fighting elite was open to all, not just the aristocracy. But to join their ranks you had to provide your own equipment, state of the art for its day, which required a substantial investment. The hoplites were considered to be undefeatable, in particular because of their shields and their long sarissa spears, which they presented from an unassailable phalanx.
The sarissa was tipped with iron, but in our own pursuit of victory we turned to titanium. This extremely tough, light and corrosion-proof metal could be seen as pre-destined for bicycle frame-building. Its surface has a hardness that is highly resistant even to being scraped across rocks.
Our frames are given an extensive hand-finishing process, before the Falkenjagd name is applied using sand-blasting techniques – no paint or decals distract from the inherent beauty of the metal itself, and the resulting finish remains impervious to even years of hard use. The Hoplit RS is built for victory, so the frame is created with full racing geometry: shorter head tube and longer top tube. It is available with either an oversized 44mm head tube or a special head tube and a straight down tube to fit the Cannondale Lefty suspension fork.
The lightest and most trusted components on the market are fitted as standard. If the available solutions don’t meet our requirements, we develop an alternative ourselves. For example, the Falkenjagd titanium rigid fork: sublime in its quality, durability and freedom from maintenance requirements. It flexes generously, softening the impact from rough terrain. Extremely high safety reserves are achieved through the demanding process of machining the fork crown and blades out of a single block of titanium. In summary: the Hoplit RS is the distillation of all our race experience, technical know-how and construction expertise, a bike that foretokens a new era of titanium race bikes.
The Hoplit RS was designed for racing and is built to give maximum advantage. We fit lightweight Shimano derailleur gears to keep weight to a minimum. The bike comes with a choice of wheels and can be individualised with a selection of options packages covering stem, handlebars and seat pin. It can be supplied with a rigid titanium fork, or a DT Swiss or Cannondale Lefty suspension fork. Riders looking for extra ride comfort choose the Falkenjagd titanium seat pin, which has noticeably more flex than the carbon fibre alternative.
