world of mtb Magazin (February 2016)
More than ten years have passed since the first commercially-produced fatbikes rolled off the production line. But the history of these exotic machines goes back much further: it’s believed that wide-tyred bikes have regularly been built since as far back as 1900. Modern fatbikes were used in the 1980s to cover long distances across Africa, and since then experimentation has continued, with resourceful riders in both Alaska and New Mexico welding two or even three standard wheel rims together to build bikes that could be used in areas previously considered unrideable.
Anyone who says that fatbikes are just a passing fashion is far off the mark – these monsters are here to stay. The Hektor Fat Pinion is the bike of choice for all adventurers for whom the story begins where the path ends. Whether just around the corner or in Siberia, Algeria or northern Norway: wherever long distances over soft terrain need to be covered, this bike feels right at home. This is where the fat low-pressure tyres show their true strengths, connecting with the ground and providing optimal traction. And with the new generation of tyres from Schwalbe, rolling resistance – even on the road – is scarcely higher than with standard mountain bike tyres.
The elegant sealed gearing system from Pinion is discreetly integrated within the frame. It adds the finishing touch to the Hektor Fat Pinion’s go-anywhere design, giving the bike complete resistance to any kind of mud, sand, snow or ice, and guaranteeing flawless gear changes under even the toughest conditions.
Our fatbike is also a favourite with riders who are looking for a totally dependable mountain bike and don’t need the maintenance hassle of front and rear suspension. The fat tyres provide a level of shock-absorption that approaches that of a short-travel fully suspended cross-country mountain bike, giving perfectly adequate ride comfort over demanding terrain, and the large contact area gives the tyres significantly more grip and a general sense of security that is particularly appreciated by newcomers to off-road riding.
The Hektor Fat can also be ridden with 650B+ tyres, so with a second pair of wheels it can be transformed into an agile cross-country bike with easy-going handling characteristics.
The 9-, 12- or 18-speed, evenly spaced Pinion gearing system has a range of up to 636%. The maintenance-free Continental drive-belt system can be ordered as an option, and the Hektor Fat Pinion can also be supplied with a fatbike-specific everyday-riding package that can include factory-fitted mudguards, racks and/or lighting – preparing it for road-riding or a round the world tour.
